Haiti Today: People, Culture & Politics Studies at
UMASS Boston and College Universite Caraibes, Montrouis, Haiti
July 24th – August 14th, 2000
The Program: This summer the Africana Studies Department at UMass Boston
will offer a program on location in Haiti. The program will explore the
history, politics, culture and economy of Haiti from both an external and
internal perspective. It will facilitate an understanding of Haiti through
total immersion into the culture, environment, language, and the country's
economic, political and social realities. Students will visit significant
historical, cultural, and ecological sites in various towns including St.
Marc, Port-au-Prince, Gonaives, and Cap Haitien. Additional activities will
include presentations by local experts, participation in local
cultural activities and meetings with civic and political leaders.
Location: The program will take place at the campus of L’Université Caraibes
in Montrouis, situated in the western coast of Haiti, the second largest
coastal area of Haiti, known as côte des Arcadins. The town of Montrouis is
centrally located about 70 miles from Port-au-Prince and provides easy
access to the Central Plateau, as well as both the northern and southern
parts of the country. In addition to attending daily classes, fieldtrips to
Museums and historical sites, participants will work in small field
projects. L’université Caraibes occupies a modern facility with living
spaces and kitchens. Participants can stay and eat on the campus.
Courses and Credits: Participants register for two three-credit courses:
Blksty 480 Haiti: Culture & Politics and Blksty 478 Independent Study. The
Independent Study project will be completed upon the participants’ return
from Haiti. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be
awarded six credits from the Africana Studies Department. By special
permission, students may receive credit for independent study from the
Political Science Department or the International Relations Program.
Faculty: Professor Marc Prou, the program director, is a member of the
Africana Studies Department and also the director of the Haitian Institute.
He has considerable travel and study experience in Caribbean countries.
Edwidge Danticat, award-winning novelist and lecturer at New York
University, is the author of Breath, Eyes and Memory (1994) and The Farming
of Bones (1998).
Fees: The fee for this program is $1,795. This fee covers all instruction,
field trips, room and board, and all local transportation in Haiti. The fee
does not include insurance or transportation between the US and Haiti.
To Apply: Students wishing to participate in the Haiti Today Program must
complete an application form, available from the Division of Continuing
Education. The application deadline is May 19, 2000. Applications received
after this date will be considered if space if available.
