UN condemns Haiti violence
The United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has condemned the recent
escalation of violence in Haiti and called for parliamentary elections to be
held as soon as possible.
He was speaking a day after the country's foremost political commentator,
Jean Dominique, was shot dead in the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Mr Annan said the unrest underlined the urgent need for the re-establishment
of Haiti's democratic institutions.
Haiti has been without parliament since it was dissolved last year, and
thousands of elected positions across the country remain unfilled. On
Monday, the United States warned Haiti that if elections were not held soon,
millions of dollars in international aid would be suspended.
