To the Editor:

Re "Political Violence at Home Made Haitians Flee, Boat Survivors Say" (front
page, April 29):

Imagine that 250 Haitian refugees had washed up on Key West rather than on a
desert island in the Bahamas, and that among them was a young, photogenic boy
who had lost a parent on the voyage.

What would the Republicans do? Would they send him back to face the turmoil
preceding a "democratic" election, or offer him asylum in the United States? Of
course we know the answer.
