The United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, has expressed concern
about the arrests of opposition candidates in Haiti following
parliamentary and local elections last month. Since the vote on May the
twenty-first, police are reported to have detained around forty
people; some are believed to be still in custody. In a statement, Mr
Annan said he was disquieted by these developments, as well as
irregularities in determining who had won seats. The Haitian electoral
authorities are still calculating the final results, and Mr Annan
stressed that he expected them to adhere strictly to correct procedures.
Opposition candidates have condemned the elections and many have
threatened to boycott the second round scheduled for June the
twenty-fifth.
