Elections and Popular Democratic Struggles in Haiti
Special Guest from Haiti:

While the upcoming elections in Haiti are the focus of public attention and
the media, workers and laborers are victims of outrageous levels of
exploitation and injustice at the hands of factory and plantation
owners who trample their rights with impunity. The Department of
Labor is in collusion with factory owners to bust unions. Papa Doc
Duvalier's reactionary Labor Code is still the law of the land.
Neither the factory owners, the plantation owners nor the state show
any regard for the law and the rights of workers and laborers.

The Haitian state is becoming more repressive and more autocratic.
Inflation is rampant. The rising cost of living has depressed
workers=92 wages far below subsistence levels. The daily minimum wage
is barely
worth $1 US, about 13=A2 an hour. Structural adjustment policies of austerit=
y
and privatization are the only =93solutions=94 being touted by the ruling
classes and U.S. imperialism, continuing to make Haiti a recipient of
international welfare.

These policies only spell further misery and doom for the Haitian
masses. What are the alternatives for the developing popular
struggles in Haiti? Are elections the only hope? Come, find out
what's happening with the autonomous popular struggles in Haiti and
debate these questions with us!
