From: Tttnhm@aol.com
News from outside Port-au-Prince.
Continuing land disputes are creating tense situations in Verrettes in the
Artibonite, and around La Plaine in the Western department. Police CIMO
(crowd control unit) and SWAT team units went to La Plaine to settle a land
dispute between the Denis and Mevs families. The Justice and Peace Commission
in Gonaives reports a dozen victims and the burning of homes in Verrettes due
to land disputes that the police and judiciary have been unable to settle.

The Association of Haitian Journalists (AJH) has condemned the aggression
against Mayard Jean Marie, Radio Metropole's Saint Marc correspondent, in
Gonaives on Saturday 29 September. The general secretary of the AJH asked
the authorities to assume their responsibilities. "This act is unacceptable
and we ask the government to face up to its responsibilities in order to
avoid a repetition of a similar incident," said Guiler C. Delva.
Members of a pro-Lavalas popular organisation known as "bale rouze" (Clean
Up) threatened the Radio Metropole correspondent as he covered President
Jean-Bertrand Aristide visit to the Artibonite department on Saturday. His
attackers broke his tape recorder after threatening to kill him. “If you
continue to spread news that goes against the Lavalas government, you are a
dead man," one of them told Mayard Jean Marie. (source: Radio Metropole, 2
