I appreciate Joe Allen's contribution to the debate. I will, however, submit
that there a difference between what a politician says in an official
capacity and its true intentions.Toussaint is practicing what is called
"marronage" in Haitian culture. How would Dr. Allen interpret Toussaint's
refusal to hand over the ports of Saint-Domingue to the 1802 Leclerc's
expedition?

I value my friend Claude Moïse's opinion on the ambiguous status of
Saint-Domingue in those days. Michael Heinl's question was: "Is Toussaint
Haitian?" Can Joe Allen comment on that?
