a1178: US tariff hypocrisy plumbs new depths (fwd)

From: Tttnhm@aol.com

Charles Arthur writes:

Will President Aristide and the Lavalas Family government follow the example
of U.S. President George W. Bush who recently announced new steel tariffs of
up to 30 percent that, he says, are necessary to protect domestic firms from
excess foreign supply?

Haiti does not of course produce steel, but it does, for example, produce
rice and plantains, and the farmers who grow these two crops have suffered
enormously from the insistence of the U.S.-dominated IMF, World Bank and IDB
that Haiti does away with its import tariffs.

U.S. producers enjoy the protection of their government.

Haiti's producers must live or die in the free market.
