12258: Re: 12255: Art book: Haiti: Anges & Demons. Spectacularimages (fwd)
From: Ingegerd Nissen Petersen <inp.ry@ci.kk.dk>
The book is an art catalogue from an exhibition held at the Halle
Saint-Pierre in Paris in 2000. The book can be ordered online through
their website at http://www.hallesaintpierre.org/ which is also in
English. The price is approx. 75US including postage for the US.
The book focuses on the representation of spririts in Haitian art and
has beautiful material on paintings as well as iron sculptures and other
art forms, and includes artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Bara.
There is a comprehensive bibliography and biographies and pictures of
the artists.
Among the contributors to that exhibition was Danish film maker Jorgen
Leth.
The Halle Saint-Pierre is a museum af primitive art worth visiting when
in Paris. Based at the foot of the Montmartre, it's easy to find. In
1988, the museum hosted its first show of Haitian paintings, the private
collection of Issa El-Saïeh, a complete knock-out. The Halle
Saint-Pierre at that time had the name of its founder who printed a
small catalogue on that occasion, but I doubt if that will be easy to
find. The cover reads:
L'Art Naif Haitien, Collection Issa El Saieh et Elisabeth El
Saieh-Pairaud
Musée d'art Naif Max Fourny du 25 octobre 1088 au 25 janvier 1989. It
does not have an ISBN.
