HAITIAN HISTORY COURSE

• Syllabus for the course    This is a 100% on-line credit course using e-mail and the world wide web. Non-credit visitors are welcome to sit in. It is possible to do the whole course after the fact by following the course below.
• Weekly Topics for the Haitian History Course
• Unit One   All the files for this first week's work. This unit includes a very basic introduction to the course, Corbett's basic view of history and an initial brief overview of Haitian history.
• Unit Two   All the files for this second week's work. This unit includes a material on the basic geography of haiti and a focus on the drastic poverty of Haiti.
• Unit Three   The readings for this week focus on three early periods in Haiti's history, or perhaps I should say Haiti's "pre-history." This week we'll study the lives and deaths of the Taino/Arawak natives, the Spanish period of colonialism and finally the pirates of Turtle Island.
• Unit Four   The work for this week is to look at a transitional period: the period of French Colonialism. The French system was reputed to be one of the most brutal, and it reaches it's peak just as the French Revoltuion is changing the thinking of many French people about human relations. This period sets the stage for our next unit -- The Haitian Revolution.
• Unit Five   This week we address on of the most important and formative periods of Haitian history, the Haitian Revolution of 1791-1804. A strong grasp of this period is critical for the understanding of how modern Haiti develops from her past.
