Novel of Woman's Lost Dreams Wins Top French Prize

The Renaudot prize, another major award, went to Dominique Bona for "Le manuscrit de Port-Ebene" (The Port-Ebene Manuscript).

The novel tells of the troubled end of the 18th century in Santo Domingo, when slaves rebel against their French colonial masters to found independent Haiti on the island's western half.

The rebellion is seen through the eyes of a French woman who also tells of her love life and discovery of voodoo. She flees back to France and writes her memoirs as an old woman.

In the novel, her manuscript is discovered by a contemporary publisher, who recalls his own wandering life as he reads it.
