Harold Courlander's Work

Today I received a call from Harold Courlander, certainly one of the most interesting anthropologists to write about Haiti. Herold and I have been in contact for several years and he is planning to donate some materials to my library.

Harold shared a rather interesting story with me. As some of you will remember from Jonathan Demme's documentary DREAMS OF DEMOCRACY there is a scene in which a group of Haitian men are doing a stick dance in drag, especially in Ogoun costumes. Harold was going through some old photographs which he took many years ago in Africa, and came across a photo of some west Africans doing a stick dance in drag. He believes there must be some connection to this tradition and the tradition that led to the dance which Demme filmed. He does plan to donate that photo to our library.

Do any of you know anything more about this particular tradition?
