In 2010, the Dogtown Historical Society began to discuss the idea for a Dogtown Veterans Memorial Park. The property targeted was the area where the gazebo is located. Efforts began with the property itself, and the owner not only agreed with the concept, he actually donated the property for the project.

The local Alderman, Bill Waterhouse, was contacted and he agreed to speak to the members to lay out the process by which the property might be approved as a City Park. DHS president, John Corbett, searched various veterans memorials around the metropolitan area and found a memorial stone that he thought would be workable and shared it with the DHS members. This veterans memorial stone has been chosen for Dogtown's memorial park.
