MAN OFFERS DOGS TO IGORROTES.

Missouri Republic, April 20, 1904

WOULD SUPPLY DOGS AND PAY THE FREIGHT

Clarence, Mo., Banker Expresses Sympathy for Governor Hunt's Igorrotes at World's Fair.

In its campaign in behalf of the dogs which are to be killed to satisfy the cravings of the Igorrotes at the World’s Fair the Humane Society of St. Louis will meet with vigorous opposition.

Every day Governor Hunt, manager of the Igorrotes, receives letters from citizens of Missouri and other States urging that “the good work go on.”

If the offers of dogs continue to come in Governor Hunt will have enough canines to supply the wants of all the Igorrotes in the Philippine Islands. A letter signed by B. B. Asbury, cashier of the Citizens’ Bank of Clarence, Mo., was received by Governor Hunt yesterday. Mr. Asbury said:

I have noticed through The Republic for several days that those meneaters you have in your charge are very hungry for some dogs to eat; also I see that a man from Dexter, Mo., agrees to send them as many as 200 if the World’s Fair Committee would pay the freight. Now, like the Dexter man, I have traveled many miles in the same country, and nothing would be more pleasing to me if those Igorrotes would eat half of the town dogs in Missouri. We have had a mad-dog scare in our town for the last few days, and marshal Dale has killed about forty dogs so far, and is still hunting for more. If those meneaters want dogs, I will gather them up and will express them to you with charges prepaid, so that they may have the delicious dish that they relish most.

If you want the dogs, let me know by return mail, and I will have my porter to gather them up and send at once.

Very respectfully yours,

B. B. Asbury
