CHELTENHAM SCHOOL 1873 - 1882
The Pitzman 1878 map pictures the location of the school
The map above is cut from the 1878 Pitzman Atlas map of Cheltenham. The detail I have
provided has Tamm Ave. on the left. (At the very bottom left corner of the map you
can see where St. James Church was, at what is today Tamm and Wade, though there was
no street where Wade is today.) At the top is "Cheltenham" which was later named
West Park. The cross-street which the school faced is Center, which is now Graham Street.
Two other identifying marks of location are:
- Running EAST from Center near Cheltenham is an alley. That is still there today,
though I don't think is goes all the way through to Spring (today's Ripple).
- Right at the Billion property on Cheltenham (between Tamm and Center) there is an
alley that runs back to the school property. That "alley" is not a drive way between the corner house
at Graham and west Park, and the home immediately to the west of it. The long drive way
runs back to the old school property.
All these clues allow me to identify the addresses of the properties TODAY (2004) which
were the former location of the school. They are:
- The first four houses are on lots that were there in 1878 and NOT PART OF THE SCHOOL.
- The school property covered the lots that are now the houses at:
- 1317 Graham
- 1329 Graham
- 1333 Graham
- 1337 Graham
So, the fifth to the either houses south of West Park on Graham.
