THE BRADY FAMILY
I do not yet know Elizabeth Brady’s mother’s maiden name, though it might have been McKanny or McKinny. But I’m not sure. No evidence.
This photo below has been in the family for years, but had no name on it.
I had nearly given up every finding out who it was, and had even thought once of pitching it as no use to the family history and an enormous frustration and diversion of my time worrying about it.
Recently I was reviewing a 1883 letter that Elizabeth’s brother, Patrick, had written her from Ireland and was simply STUNNED to read
“Mother was proud to know that yous (sic) liked her picture and tell the children what she wore on her head is what old Anty McKanny used to wear.”
I grabbed that photo, remembering the odd head dress and then realized the whole outfit is clearly not from the U.S. I think the evidence is clear.
