a1083: Re: a1080: Convergence refuses to participate in new government : Poincy comments (fwd)

From: "[iso-8859-1] Jean Poincy" <caineve@yahoo.fr>

Definitely, the Convergence is engaged in an
irrational political game, a zero sum game politic, by
refusing to participate in new government if they are
called upon. Perfect political stage is of no order
considering the current circomstances.

Unfortunately, they have more to lose than Lavalas.

1) They have nothing at all while Lavalas technically
has it all.

2) Prefering not to have a voice at all rather than
having one that is not heard by the government, they
fail to seize the opportunity to redeem themselves as
credible politicians before the community.

3) Like it or not, Aristide is there to complete his
mandate, successful or not. If Aristide's ego is tied
to being Mr. president, resolving the country's
problem is the least of his worries. Let's hope that
is not the case; but if it is so, he can spend his
entire term at odds with his opponents to never come
to a resolution.

The success for him would be just not to be ousted
during his term. That makes remaining in power the
political end. How skillful a politician is to
maintain such a position determines the degree of not
wanting to cooperate.

Aristide has lots of room to play the game that way,
but not the Convergence. It is amazing to see that not
one of this group can bring himself to this level to
understand what I would call "political delicacies".

All they would need to do is to accept to be part of
any future government that will take place. In so
doing, they would be able assert themselves in the
political affair of Ayiti. At least people would see
where they really stand relatively to Aristide.

They're making a big mistake by thinking that the
government would not acknowledge their claims. As long
as their political moves would be public and well
explained to spur a real debate among the public, they
would gain much ground to the detriment of a reluctant
Aristide. Maybe, Aristide would change his game plan
for the better and for the benefit of the country.

Their absence in the government is a losing strategy
like their non participation in the elections was. All
they thought of gaining by boycotting the elections
and their provisional government went into smoke. They
never conceived of recognizing Aristide as the
president. In the course of negotiations, they've come
to accept what they have rejected.

Aristide will complete his term with great
difficulties, but he will be the man in command.
That's a sufficient criterion for success in the mind
of Ayitian politicians inclusively. The way politics
are conducted in Ayiti, the political challenge does
not come from the outer circle of government. One must
be in to be a true and effective opposition. A small
voice can resonate real loud if things are done
appropriately.

I think that the Convergence needs to reassess their
position and consider partaking in the formation of a
new government, not in the hope of resolving the past
problems, but to show what they are capable of doing
better than Aristide or show that Aristide is up to no
good if they can. That's a political imperative.
Standing on the side line to oppose just for the sake
of it is negative politics.

Ayiti has lived, lives and will live
