#164: Haitian-Massachusetts Politics: Lucien reports

From: Charlot J Lucien <charlot4@juno.com>

Haitians in Massachusetts are celebrating something quite new in the
Massachusetts political field. Marie Sainte Fleur, a former Assistant
Attorney General, quietly became the first Haitian American to occupy a
seat as a state representative in the legislature. Some like to point
out that this is one more step toward broader representation for women in
the political arena in this state, while others emphasize her status as
the daughter of a Haitian immigrant who fled the Duvalier regime in the
late sixties... In any event, this is one occurence that has the virtue
to mobilize more immigrants when it comes to targeting political
positions where their voices can be heard. More information to come...
