#4547: Haitian-American Soccer Hero (fwd)

From: Henry F. Chip Carey <polhfc@langate.gsu.edu>

On NPR's Weekend Edition, Saturday, there is a moving report (see www.npr.org for audio feed) on the 1950 World Cup match, England's first, in which the US shocked the world with with a 1-0 victory. (The US press ignored this incredible upset). The US player who scored the only and winning goal was a Haitian-American. Sadly, he returned to Haiti for a visit to see his family at some point. His brother was anti-Duvalier. When the soccer star was visiting, he was arrested and tortured to death because of his family connection.
