Haiti presidential election date set
From the newsroom of the BBC World Services
A date has been announced in Haiti for elections to choose a new
president, amid a continuing controversy over the results of
recent parliamentary voting. The ballot will take place on November
26th. The former president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, is widely expected
to stand for re-election. Mr Aristide's Lavalas Family party won most
seats in parliamentary elections which concluded last month. The
international community has questioned the counting process and
threatened to put much needed aid to the country on hold.Meanwhile, the
head of the Organisation of American States, Cesar Gaviria, has
announced he will visit Haiti next week in an attempt to resolve the
dispute.
