'Feels Like Vodou Spirit' - Saturday 14th October - The Haiti Support Group
presents an afternoon of film and talks exploring the Haitian art explosion
and its symbiotic relationship with the Vodou religion.

Films:
'The Divine Horseman', by Maya Deren, artist, and anthropologist, examining
Vodou practice in the late 1950s.
'Lineaments of the Lwa', a short film, by Leah Gordon, Ranu Mukherjee and
Maggie Roberts, exploring the presence of Vodou spirits in Haitian art,
culture and life.
Talks:
An introduction to the spirits in Vodou Art, and the film 'Lineaments of
the Lwa' - Ranu Mukherjee (artist, Orphandrift collective, lecturer in Fine
Art at Goldsmiths College and University of Hertfordshire.)
'Combination and Transformation in Vodou Doll Art' - Maggie Roberts
(artist, Orphandrift collective, and lecturer in Fine Art at Goldsmiths
College and Central St. Martins) explores the politics and psyche reflected
in art objects shaped from the detritus of US industrial excess.
'The Haitian Gallery System: liberation or suffocation' - Leah Gordon
(photographer, filmmaker and author of 'A Book of Vodou') explores the
effect of Western cultural practice and ideology on Vodou inspired art.
'"Voodoo": Metaphors of Contagion and Western Cultural Anxiety' - Inspired
by the Barbara Browning book, 'Infectious Rhythm', John Cussans (artist,
video maker and lecturer in Cultural and Media studies at Richmond
International University) will address the representation of Vodou in 20th
century popular culture as symptomatic of a range of Western cultural
anxieties.
The dayschool is being held in conjunction with the exhibition 'Catching
the Spirit: Representations of Vodou spirits in contemporary Haitian art',
running from 12th October - 11th November 2000, also at The October
