Alternative Haitien Money
By Eugene Seagraves
Port-au-Prince, Haiti, 25 February 2001 (Rooters)
The Alternative Government of Haiti, under the presidency of J.
Rard Goug (who was not elected by the people!), has issued a news
release regarding the planned printing of new money, to be known as
"Alternative Gourdes". These bills, which will feature the photos of
many of the members of the Convergence Group, will be placed in
circulation within the month of March, and will be useable on
alternative days.
Mr. Ray Nald Jorj, recently appointed as Alternative Director of
the Ministry of Alternative money is expected to announce which days
the alternative money will be useable. It is thought at this time that
the alternative 25 gourde notes will be used on Mondays, Wednesdays
and Fridays; and the alternative 50 gourde notes will be useable on
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Information regarding the days on
which the higher bills will be used will be forthcoming. For the
moment, it appears that all alternative gourde notes will be useable
on Sundays, but only between noon and 6:00pm.
This arrangement is being made by the Alternative Government of
Haiti in an effort to improve the economic situation in the country,
and to attract foreign investment. In an effort to make the
alternative gourdes further desireable, they will be distributed free
to all who present themselves at the main gate of Fort Dimanche any
alternative morning between the hours of 8 and 9.
The official Haitien gourdes (dirty as they may be), issued by the
Ministry of Finance of the official Haitien Government will continue
in circulation and will probably be acceptable on all days and at all
hours and by all persons, so please do not dispose of them until
instructed to do so. Additionally, official Haitien Gourdes may be
exchanged on alternative days for the newer Alternative Goudes at any
alternative bank. (RWS)
