8546: Haiti keeps trying to resolve political impasse (fwd)
From: Max Blanchet <maxblanchet@worldnet.att.net>
Port-au-Prince, Haiti, CANA - The Haitian government set aside a
midnight Sunday deadline to form a committee to oversee new
elections for seven disputed Senate seats as it kept trying to win
support for the process from the main opposition group.
"When you're in the full process of negotiations, you can stop the
clock," said Luigi Einaudi, assistant secretary-general of the
Organization of American States, referring to a July 1 deadline to
form an election council to oversee the new elections set to be
held by the end of this year.
Einaudi did not specify if a new deadline had been set. The OAS
has been trying to help the impoverished Caribbean nation toward
a political solution since a dispute erupted after parliamentary
elections in May last year.
