I have to disagree with Dr Bell, I have seen:

"Carte de L'Isle d'Hayti Aujourd'hui l'Espagnole, ou 
 L'Isle de St Domingue Avec les Isles Voisins… "

So the spelling of Hayti must have been used in france, or at least
published in France.  If you do a search word does shows up on maps
in French.
