Haitian policeman killed in attack by gunmen

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- A policeman was killed in an
attack by a group of gunmen on a police station in the
Haitian town of Petit-Goave in the early hours of
Sunday, police sources said.

About 10 gunmen carried out the predawn attack, but
their identities and motives are not yet known, the
sources said. No arrests have been made.

Petit-Goave, about 40 miles west of Port-au-Prince,
has been a center of tension relating to a dispute
between President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's ruling
Lavalas Family party and the opposition over
parliamentary elections 20 months ago.
