Haiti: US-based pro-democracy body visits, will meet various sectors but not
FL
BBC Monitoring Service - United Kingdom; Feb 15, 2002

A delegation from the International Republican Institute [IRI; a Washington,
DC-based body which promotes democracy throughout the world] will come to
the country as a prelude to IRI's possible return to Haiti. IRI left Haiti a
few years ago under growing pressure from members of pro-Lavalas
organizations.
IRI is preparing to send to Haiti this Sunday [17 February] a five-member
delegation led by Vice-President Georges Fauriol. According to a reliable
source contacted by Signal FM yesterday in Washington, the members of the
delegation will meet several sectors concerned about the Haitian crisis,
except the Lavalas Family [FL], which is supporting violence throughout the
country, according to IRI officials. Several subjects, including the
political crisis resulting from the 21 May 2000 elections and the events of
17 December, are on the delegation's agenda.
It should nevertheless be pointed out that the duration of this delegation's
stay, to be precise that of the IRI delegation, in the country remains
unknown.
