To repeat Joel Dreyfus, what I said is "technically correct". The case of
Toussaint's nationality was never and is not a problem for Haitians. They
call him: "le précurseur de l'indépendance haïtienne". Michael Heinl, who
knows Haitian history well, remembers that after the Constitution of July
1801 Saint-Domingue could be regarded as an independent country making its
own laws and choosing its own leader. After this act of defiance towards
France, there is no doubt that calling Toussaint a French general is
"technically correct" but clashes with reality.
