a1273: canadian government letter (fwd)

i was recently told that the canadian government was
asking us all to leave, that since early december
every day a foreigner had been kidnapped and that it
was not safe to stay here.  i eventually got to see
the english version of the letter, on the government
website (travel advisories) and that isn't in fact
what it says, although they do tell us to leave and
there was apparently a meeting of reps from around the
country which i never heard the results of.  no one
around here seems too interested.  apparently, though,
and i suppose you all know this, there have been
kidnappings nearly every day.  they are mostly
haitians, mostly business people, although a few
foreingers, missionaries, children have also been
taken and not everyone has returned.  this is
happening in pap and on route nationale # 1.  things
are pretty quiet up here in cap haitien for the most
part at the moment.  i tell you the above on the slim
chance you may not have heard it exactly thus, as i
hadn't and most people here hadn't either.  it is
impossible for me to read almost any of this
discussion list now, so i have no idea what you all
have been up to.
