1800: The rain

The rain is the ultimate testimony of the socioeconomic ravages against
Haiti.
What the land and the people depend on for life also destroys them. And
this is
not new. In 1968, a friend's car had a flat tire during a storm, and she
stepped back to get under shelter while her husband fixed it... she fell
into a
water-covered, open manhole, whose lid had been popped by the water
pressure.
Only her height and quick reflexes saved her from being swept through the
sewers to the waterfront, like the Brazilian ambassador and a marchand
charbon
he had tried to rescue in a similar storm. No matter the personal or
political
rationales for short-sighted economic policies, the results are eventually
"democratic." The rain destroys the rich and poor alike.
