Student Delince wins nursing scholarship

Enrico Delince has been awarded the Marie Carmel Remy scholarship by the
Haitian American Nurses Association to pursue his lifelong dream of a
nursing career. The scholarship, coupled with the associate of science
nursing degree he received from the college, gives him a head start to meet
the challenges of the demanding profession.

Delince learned of the scholarship from his MDCC nursing professor, Marie
Etienne, who had urged him to apply. The application process required him to
write an essay on why he chose to pursue a nursing career. The HANA review
panel took only a week to notify him he had won the $500 award.

It's been a long road from Haiti, where Delince was once a law student.
While in Haiti, he watched his father, Rico Jean-Marie Delince, become ill.
His brother, Evens, disappeared.

Delince came to Miami in 1994 and, five years later, his father died.

''Watching my father being cared for by a particular nurse back in Haiti
following his stroke inspired me to become a nurse,'' Delince said. ``I
think nowadays nurses are missing out on caring for their patients, seeing
them more as a client than a human being.''

He feels that socializing with patients and learning about their feelings
are just as important to the healing process as administering medication.

Once in Miami, Delince began studying at MDCC, taking English for Speakers
of Other Languages classes and then nursing courses. He quickly caught the
attention of his professors.

''Enrico was an excellent student and one whom the faculty enjoyed teaching.
We are especially pleased that he received the Marie Carmel Remy
scholarship,'' said Dr. Frances Aronovitz, director of the MDCC School of
Nursing.

The scholarship is named after Marie Remy, a nursing faculty member and
president of the Haitian American Nurses Association who died last year.

''Ms. Remy would have been proud, as Enrico epitomizes such caring qualities
coupled with a knowledge base that meant so much to her,'' Aronovitz said.

Delince, who lives in North Miami Beach with his wife and 19-month-old
daughter, plans to use the scholarship money to take preparation courses for
his licensing exam in June.
