• THE ASSIGMENTS
  • The Analysis:
    1. In the first sentence state the theme of the paper.
    2. The second sentence should be the statment of what you take is William James' MOST IMPORTANT thesis in the paper. ONLY in the case where there are two or more EQUALLY important theses you much choose one of them. But the one you choose must be either THE most important theses, or ONE of them.
    3. Name / NUMBER / Fully explain -- the main arguments for the thesis.
    4. Be sure you run the IF / THEN test on these arguments. EACH independent argument must be a sufficient argument for the thesis. If it is not, then it simply isn't an argument for the thesis.
    5. Observe the rigorous margins Corbett demands.
    6. Write in fully intelligible and standard English.
  • The Criticism
    1. In the first sentence state the theme of YOUR paper. Since this is a paper about William James' paper, the theme should carry the name of William James in it.
    2. The second sentence should be the statment of YOUR critical stand on James. Be sure to name if this is positive or negative criticism. Also, since this is a criticism of JAMES, you must state exactly what it is you disagree with in James (if negative) or exactly what you will enhance in James (if positive). You may only have ONE thesis and it must be of something central and significant to James' main thesis.

  • Any paper that does not RIGOROUSLY follow these guidelines will receive a MAXIMUM grade of C, and probably much less. These guidelines are not OPTIONS, they are DEMANDS.
