ASSIGNMENTS ON READINGS UP TO PAGE 33 IN ARIES
FROM: CENTURIES OF CHILDHOOD by Philippe Aries
(New York: Vintage Books, 1962)
- NOTE: There will be 1000 points of assignments on the work for this unit.
Since I don't have the whole posted yet, I don't have them all worked out, but they
should be all up very soon. Sorry for the delay.
- Assignment 3A: (100 points) Due Wed. Feb. 23rd. Late work will be penalized, and no
work will be accepted after the Aries' unit is finished. This assignment is on the introduction to Aries book and Corbett's introductory essay.
Give a clear summary in your own words of both Aries' introduction to the book and
Corbett's introduction to Aries. Do not quote anything. Tell it in your own words. Then go beyond the
report and reflect a bit on what you have read. Be sure to give very clear reasons why
you are thinking what you are thinking.
- Assignment 3B: (100 points) Due Wed. Feb. 23rd. Late work will be penalized, and no
work will be accepted after the Aries' unit is finished. This assignment is on the reading: The Ages of Life. Give a clear summary
in your own works of Aries' position in this first investigation. What is the CENTRAL
point and claim of the section (in ONE short sentence). Why all the focus on langauge?
- Assignment 3C: (50 points) Due Wed. Feb. 23rd. Late work will be penalized, and no
work will be accepted after the Aries' unit is finished. Reflect on what you have read in The Ages of Life. What puzzles come up, what thoughts
does he stir? What significance, if any, do you see in what he is saying?
- Assignment 3D: (100 points) Due Mon. Feb. 28rd. Late work will be penalized, and no
work will be accepted after the Aries' unit is finished. This assignment is on the reading: The Discovery of Childhood. Give a clear summary
in your own works of Aries' position in this second investigation. What is the CENTRAL
point and claim of the section (in ONE short sentence). Why all the focus on langauge?
- Assignment 3E: (50 points) Due Mon. Feb. 28rd. Late work will be penalized, and no
work will be accepted after the Aries' unit is finished. Reflect on what you have read in The Discovery of Childhood. What puzzles come up, what thoughts
does he stir? What significance, if any, do you see in what he is saying?
)
- Assignment 3F: (100 points Due Wed. March 1. Late work will be penalized, and no
work will be accepted after the Aries' unit is finished. Respond to Corbett's follow-up
analysis on the meaning and problematic of Aries (posted on the Aries page and e-mailed to
you). I want you to dig into this one and not just summarize. Rather, analyze the way Corbett presents
the issues and call attention to what Corbett has added that is NOT in Aries, and what Corbett just
illucidates about Aries that you may have missed. Comment on any puzzles that still remain for you
in those early texts you have read and raise whatever doubts you have.
- Assignment 3G: (100 points Due Friday March 3rd. Late work will be penalized, and no
work will be accepted after the Aries' unit is finished.) Assignment is on the reading on
From Immodesty to Innocence. This assignment has two parts. Make clear
what Aries means in the transition from immodesty to innoncence and what evidence does he has that such a
change occurred. Secondly, describe the two concepts of childhood according to Aries.
- Assignment 3H: (50 points Due Friday March 3rd. Late work will be penalized, and no
work will be accepted after the Aries' unit is finished.) Dig into Aries' work and reflect on
what responses you are sensing in assignment 3G. Make your position quite clear, and give strong reasons to explain
these responses.
- Assignment 3I: (100 points Due Wednesday March 8th. Late work will be penalized, and no
work will be accepted after the Aries' unit is finished.) Assignment is on the reading on
The Roughness of Childhood. This assignment has two parts. Make clear
what Aries means by the roughness of school children in the ancien regime. Secondly,
make clear what significance this has for his thesis about the development of childhood.
- Assignment 3J: (50 points Due Wednesday March 8th. Late work will be penalized, and no
work will be accepted after the Aries' unit is finished.) Dig into Aries' work and reflect on
what responses you are sensing in assignment 3I. Make your position quite clear, and give strong reasons to explain
these responses.
- Assignment 3K: (200 points Due no later than Tuesday March 14th.) Write a significant
essay of some depth assessing what you take to be the significance or lack of significance
to modern reflections on philosophy of education of Aries' treatment of the history of childhood.
Please: the point is not to take a position that you would expect Corbett to approve. Rather,
take a position that you think the evidence supports and give that evidence with force. Obviously
this is taken to be a rather significant essay in both size and scope. I will probably post of couple of the
more interesting essays to my web site with the student's permission first sought. SPECIAL NOTE: This is the last
date for any work to reach me that has to do with Aries unit. After this date no work will
be accepted for credit.
