UNIT FIVE: PAULO FREIRE AND EDUCATION FOR CRITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS

• Basic Plan for unit five: In the 10 days we will look at two key Freirian positions:
    

  --We will read the first two chapters from Paulo Freire's book PEDAGOGY OF THE OPPRESSED
  --Chapter 1 concerns itself with the structure of oppression and how the pedagogy of the oppressed address this problem
  --Chapter 2 will concern the difference between Freirian pedagogy of the oppressed and the "banking method of educating"

• Definitions and clarifications of terms in Freire.  Paulo Freire can be difficult to read. He uses many technical terms, even creates some new ones himself. I highly recommend this short guide to terms, meanings and concepts BEFORE reading Freire. I believe it could reduce your reading time by half and increase your understanding significantly.
