In a footnote on page 82, Segel says of him: "the moving spirit of the "Young Vienna"
circle." Two of his essays, "The Overcoming of Naturalism" and "Red Trees" are included
in this volume.

how Herman Bahr led a protest to support Gustav Klimt when the city of Vienna backed down
on mounting his three paintings, Philosophy, Jurisprudence and Medicine, which had been
commissioned for the university building. The paintings were never mounted and later lost
in a fire.
