COMMENTS ON PLACES TO BY FOOD AND DRINK IN KAISERMUHLEN
I'm just building this site. It will take a
while. I hope to build a collection of comments from Webster U. faculty and students
who use these places and have things to say about them.
- BACKOFENFront outdoor seating, and lovely garden in rear (enter through restaurant). Two rooms of indoor seating.
Good food. Special breakfasts.
At lunch they have a Haustoast (dark bread with
ham and cheese, baked -- very nice).
For main meals try the chicken salad (whole cut up
chicken breast with lovely salad), or the marvelous
medallions of pork. Huge meal.
Backofen is also a bakery and has nice breads and pasteries.
- BILLA Caution: You must bring your own bags to the store or
buy bags there. They are not free. Also, when buying fresh vegetables or fruit, each
bin is marked with a number. You take items to the scale, punch in the bin's number
and the scale will print the price, which you stick on the fruit or vegetables. If you
get to the cashier without this you will be yelled at and they will not sell you the item.
Grocery stores are often rather unfriendly places! The sole exception I've found to this
general rule is the Julius Meinl main store on the Graben. Prices are higher, but my
do they treat one well! Please note, you are expected to move your groceries immediately from the
checkout counter after paying and pack them in your bag or whatever at the counter
provided for that.
- CHINA RESTAURANT Sign is confusing. Says no Ruhetag, but seems to say except Sunday
and holidays. I was there once. I didn't like it. The service was simply rude, the food only
passable. I would personally choose to eat Asian food at Kokos up on Schautaustrasse.
- GEFLUGEL-EIER At the corner with Bellegardegasse. Small
food shop which specializes in poultry and eggs. Has a few other items like beer and soda, but not much else. I've not shopped there, but would bet the poultry and eggs
would be quite fresh.
- GEMUSEKONSERVEN / OBST Small fruit and vegetable stand run by a Middle-Eastern man.
He also has very good humos and terramusalata and good
Middel-Eastern fladden brot. Wine, olives, and oils as well. If you want to try some
less common sorts of wine he has them. Not super bargains, but interesting variety.
- Café Kaimu Small dark and large café.
Sometimes has tables outside. Seems to be open late.
- KOKOS ASIA RESTAURANT On Tuesdays it isn't open after the
mid-day period. Otherwise 7 days a week. The food is quite decent and the ambiance is lovely, the service
just excellent. No outdoor seating, but a lovely interior. Webster U. folks with identification
receive a 10% discount.
- EISSALON TRENTO (EIS BARTOLLI ANDREA) Excellent Italian ice cream, and coffee. Portions are a bit
smaller than some other Italian ice shops. Good product.
- PFERDEFLEISCHAUER One of Vienna's strangest meat
markets. As the name suggests it serves horse meat. Sausages,
chunks and so on. Anyway you can imagine horse meat it has it.
- PIZZAKELLER Serves pizza and Italian food. Has nice outdoor seating and
several rooms inside.
- PIZZA FLITZER Will deliver, but watch it. Their pizza is okay and good price. However, when we've ordered by phone it has been
delivered from a different shop of same name, and the pizza's
never been as good. I recommend picking it up or eating it there.
Just one or two tables. I'm not personally high on the pizza. Too much tomato sauce flavor for me.
- STARS AND STRIPESKitchen open until 11. Very good food. The
chicken burger is a nice children breast grilled and not
breaded. Hard to find in Vienna!
- STROCK BACKEREI A bakery, pastry shop. Ourdoor seating in
front and some seating inside. Excellent pasteries and breads.
- TEE-RUM LIKOR Strange place. Very tiny, I've never seen a woman
inside. Sort of an older men's bar.
- UNAMED VEGETABLE STAND The fruite and vegetables
often look quite decent, but we had a bad expience of him wanting to charge an
absurd price suggesting a willingness to take advantage of the foreigner.
- WOBER GASTHAUS Decent place for traditional Austrian food.
Taste, but most meat is breaded and fried. I had fish there one evening that was
not breaded, but was fried in butter. Rather small portions for the price.
- WIENER SCHNITELPLATZ'LFast food restaurant with some seating inside. Specializes in
schnitzel sandwiches which are simply huge. Great buy for the money
- ZIELPUNKT Like Billa, no bags, no English and curt service at best.
But, you don't have to weigh your own vegetables and fruit. Just take then to the checkout
counter. Please note, you are expected to move your groceries immediately from the
checkout counter after paying and pack them in your bag or whatever at the counter
provided for that.
- ZUM LINDE PRUMULLERAustrian food and during October they feature wild game for
the entire month. Good food.
