The Museu de la Pau was inaugurated on 10 December 2000 in the former palace of the Marquise of Vivel in La Vall d’Uixó, Spain. The museum’s opening exhibition recounted the devastating human and cultural effects of the atomic bombs launched on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World war II. Photographs in the exhibition had been donated by peace museums in Japan. The exhibition also showcased the work of students of the Master’s degree in International Peace, Conflict and Development Studies at the Universitat Jaume I.

The Museu de la Pau was promoted by Vicent Martínez Guzman, director of the UNESCO Chair of Philosophy for Peace at Universitat Jaume I. The museum aimed to cover various areas such as multiculturalism, disarmament, antiviolence, racism, gender violence, solidarity, environment and everything related to respect for human rights. In alignment with these themes, artist Pere Ribera devised a logo for the museum that represents a hand that embraces the world.
