After the death of Johan Gerard Daniël Wateler in 1927 the Carnegie Foundation inherited most of his fortune for establishing a peace prize. The Carnegie Foundation owns a photo of Johan Wateler, which is one of the few photos left of him, a print of the family coat of arms and a silver ink well. Apart from this there was not much known about the life of Johan Wateler.

Extensive research by historian Marten van Harten has revealed some interesting facts about the person, his career, his social circle and ultimately, his motives to establish the Wateler Peace Prize.

A story-telling event called The Rainbow Children was held during the Just Peace Festival, celebrating the International Day of Peace in The Hague. The event was organised by the INMP Secretariat in cooperation with a local Quaker church.

The event was held for children age 5 to 9 years old in the playroom of the Quaker House. Participating children listened to the rainbow story and coloured-in a peace rainbow picture afterwards.

The kind fairy sees that there is a terrible war happening. She helps the lonesome and sad children so that they can play together again. But first they have to pass through dark woods. Then they arrive at a peaceful light space, where the sun is shining and it makes everyone happy.

The first book-length study of peace museums was published in 2016 by Dr Joyce Apsel. This volume introduces the different approaches of peace museums – from Japan, which has the largest number of sites, to Bradford, UK and Guernica, Spain. Some peace museums and centers emphasize popular peace symbols and figures, others provide alternative narratives about conscientious objection or civil disobedience, and still others are sites of persuasion, challenging the status quo about issues of war, peace, disarmament, and related issues. This welcome introduction to peace museums considers the challenges and opportunities faced by these institutions now and in the future.

Peter van den Dungen writes that Dr Apsel, “has conceived of her study as ‘A Peace Museum Sampler’ which describes and analyzes four museums (two from Europe and one each from the United States and Japan) as well as two peace centers (both in Europe) which can also be regarded as museums. Many other peace museums are briefly introduced along the way. As shown by the extensive bibliography and notes, the author has made use of an impressive number of source materials.”
