Utopias: Visions of the World

PSYC/SOCI 4900: Senior Overview

Summer 2011

Tired of opening up the newspaper only to read about crime and war? Tired of taking courses which focus on all the evil in the world? Then, why not take a break this summer and read about utopias? Social scientists and others have often written about and created utopian views of the world. In this reading course, we will read and analyze some of these utopian visions. For example, we will explore B. F. Skinner's communal utopia of Walden II and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's feminist utopia of Herland.
