The Thomas family was in Dogtown from before 1860 until at least 1939

"Got to digging through my notes and found some references to "Thomas". Lo and Behold, found the Thomas family in 1860,70,& 80 census. William O. Thomas was the head of the family with a home on Manchester between Sublette and Macklind. Also found it on the Cheltenham Map. In the 1880 census William O. was listed as a merchant, evidently at his home. A son, Phillip was a newspaper man. The 1870 census shows a John at 27 and a coal miner from Wales. Also a John at 28 and a fire clay digger. This could be the J.M.Thomas, Founder of "Highlands Fire Clay Company." "Lou"

There is also a useful newspaper article from 1966 which sheds lots of light on the THomas family. See:
