By The Associated Press, Regional breakdown of HIV/AIDS epidemic as
estimated by UNAIDS:
- Latin America and Caribbean: Estimated 1.67 million people living
with AIDS virus at end of 1999. Epidemic mainly spread by heterosexual
intercourse. Haiti worst hit, with 5.1 percent of adults infected,
followed by Barbados with 4.1 percent.
- North America: Estimated 900,000 people living with AIDS virus at end
of 1999. United States has infection rate of 0.61 percent of adult
population, and Canada 0.30 percent. Concentrated among injecting drug
users and homosexual men. San Francisco studies report increase in
high-risk behavior among young homosexuals and rise in gonorrhea,
indicating danger of increase in HIV.
