OAS SECRETARY GENERAL NAMES
REPRESENTATIVES TO HAITI
Secretary General Cesar Gaviria has designated the Chief of the OAS Special Mission for Strengthening Democracy in Haiti, David Lee of Canada, as his Special Representative in Haiti.
The Secretary General simultaneously designated Ambassador Denneth Modeste of Grenada, Deputy Chief of the Special Mission, as Director of the Office of the General Secretariat of the OAS in Haiti.
These appointments are on an interim basis. Both officials will continue to devote attention to the Special Mission, whose further development is of critical importance. The appointments are effective immediately and will continue indefinitely, until further notice.
The Secretary General takes the opportunity to express his appreciation to Ambassador Sergio Romero and to the Mexican Government for lending his services to the OAS. Ambassador Romero, who served as the Secretary General's Special Representative for the past year, played a critical role in the Organization's on-going efforts to facilitate resolution of the political difficulties in Haiti.
