12972: Re: 12965: Strife shows waning faith in Aristide, August 29, 2002 Newsday (fwd)

Several journalists have complained recently that many foreign desk editors,
with reporters in Haiti or writing pieces about Haiti, are preferential
towards stories that portray an environment of strife and violence in Haiti.
These same editors are also chomping at the bit for stories that illustrate
the disillusion of the Lavalas base with the leadership of Lavalas.
Simultaneously, any kind word of balance that shows any positive development
on behalf of the Haitian government, or any of the grassroots organizations
which support it, are being summarily edited out or changed beyond
recognition.
I have held for many years that the ultimate aim of U.S. foreign policy in
Haiti has been to find a means to separate the base of Lavalas supporters
from the leadership of the movement. This is not a new strategy, by any
means, and I pray that it will not yield yet another victory for a selfish,
short-sided and mean-spirited policy that does not serve the interests of
the American people. The Haitian people certainly deserve better.
