14113: Slavin: Follow-up on Chamberlain's Cayes Speech Req. (fwd)
From: Patrick_Slavin/Unicefusa%UNICEFUSA@unicefusa.org
Following up on Lord Chamberlain's request for a text of the Les Cayes
speech, the President raised points of Negritude in his remarks earlier
this year at the PauP airport following his junket to South Africa -- at
least according to the English text that was circulated by the Government
of Haiti. While nationalism and patriotism have long been hallmarks of
Aristide's oratory, I had never heard Aristide stress Negritude, or in the
words of C.L.R. James (and most likely F. Duvalier) Pan-Africanism, before
-- can any of the veteran Haitians or Haitianists on the list comment if
this is a new rhetorical device?
Thanks,
Patrick
