I can't tell you a thing about her life in the USA but Mildred Trouillot
Aristide is from solid Haitian bourgois root. She left as a child but would
spend vacations in Haiti amongst her bourgois relatives. In the 1960's many
Haitian bourgois families left Haiti under the Papa Doc brutal rule.
Bourgois families in Haiti maintain their standard of living through stong
family ties and financial support. Back in the 60's when they left Haiti
(and their extended family support system) for countries like the US, many
faced some hard financial times. Some would actually send their young
children back to their parents in Haiti for several years at a time as they
could not afford quality child care while working. Maybe Mildred's family
could not afford live in a nicer neighborhood and send her to what you would
consider a bourgois school in New York but she is from the Haitian
Bourgoisie. Maybe someone else on the list can clarify a little more about
this.
