Co-ordinated efforts lead to apprehension of illegal immigrants
BY VANESSA C. ROLLE

Guardian Staff ReporterJust two weeks into the month of May, some 281
illegal immigrants were apprehended due to the co-ordinated efforts of the
Department of Immigration Enforcement Unit, The Royal Bahamas Police and
Defence Forces, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

For the period May 4 - May 14, 243 Haitians, 17 Jamaicans, 6 Cubans, 5
Chinese, 4 Americans, 2 Dominicans, 2 Trinidadians, 1 Brazilian and 1
Colombian have been apprehended and processed at The Detention Centre,
Carmichael Road.

These immigrants were found in New Providence, Black Point, Exuma and
Inagua.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Labour and Immigration reported that
the immigrants would be repatriated to their homelands in short order.

However, some 156 immigrants have already been repatriated, including some
individuals recently apprehended and others who were housed at the Centre.

Of that number 132 were Haitians, 17 Jamaicans, 5 Guyanese, 1 American and 1
Brazilian.

The Government spent some $24,000 in this repatriation exercise.
