16627: Haiti Reborn: National Day of Action for Haiti, 9/30/03 (fwd)

From: Haiti Reborn <haiti@quixote.org>

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION FOR HAITI

WHEN: September 30, 2003

WHO: The Let Haiti Live: Coalition for a Just U.S. Policy

WHY:
On October 1, President George Bush will make a decision on whether or
not to enforce new sanctions against Haiti.

Haiti's democracy is in danger if elections do not take place before
January 2004, when the terms of most legislators expire.

WHAT:

** Join us in Washington, DC for a day of lobbying! Visit the offices
of your Congressional representatives and ask them to join you in
supporting Haiti.

** If you can't come to Washington, call your representatives on
September 30, or send faxes and emails to their offices.

Kite Ayiti Viv!

LET HAITI LIVE!!

The first victory in the campaign to Let Haiti Live came at the end of
July. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) signed agreements and
promised to release $146 million in humanitarian loans. But the struggle
is far from finished, and the U.S. government is already constructing
new reasons for withholding aid.

On October 1, President Bush will vote on whether or not to enforce
sanctions against Haiti for its Trafficking in Persons (TIP) rating. As
you are aware, the U.S. has a near complete embargo on aid to Haiti
already. These sanctions will force U.S. representatives at
international financial institutions to vote against any loans or grants
for Haiti. For more on Haiti's TIP rating or the need for elections
before 2004, visit our website: www.haitireborn.org.

Call President Bush, Secretary of State Colin Powell and your
Representative and Senators!

Urge them to release humanitarian aid to Haiti, and ask them to support
democratic elections before the end of 2003!

** To reach President Bush: 202-456-1414

** To reach Secretary Powell: 202-647-4000

** To reach your senators and Representative: 202-224-3121 or
Congress.org.

If you would like to participate in lobbying in Washington, please
