18345: Labrom: Re Davis Cup tennis (fwd)
>From Jacqui Labrom voyageslumiere@haitelonline.com\
Just to bring a different subject to the List!!!
Davis Cup tennis played out over this past weekend with Haiti vs
Uruguay. Friday they played Singles matches and the two countries won
one each.
Saturday in the doubles match - Haiti won. So Sunday it was up to Haiti
to win just one singles match (two were scheduled) - Haiti's no 1
against Uruguay's no 1, and Haiti's no 2 against Uruguay's no. 2.
Unfortunately neither of Haiti's players won - they both had 'medical
timeouts' - I think Bertrand Madsen was very tired after having played
for the previous two days + he was suffering from the heat. Ifton Louis,
Haiti's No.2 also appeared to have a leg muscle problem. Madsen was
finished in 3 sets. Ifton Louis rallied after 2 sets down and won the
3rd set, to the great delight of the big crowd. But he didn't win. It
was hard as no. 2 to have the hopes of all of Haiti on his less
experienced shoulders. Such a shame. Mind you both of the Uruguayan main
players were about 16 or 17 years old - almost half the age of
Madsen!!!! They were all over the court and played well despite the
fanatic support by the Haitian crowd. They didn't seem to have anyone
cheering them on!!
I think they could do with some Psychological counselling as a lot of
the sports people have. They need to lift themselves up when they are
losing. It wasn't from lack of support from the crowd. There was a
good crowd there on Sunday and in the middle of the day along came a
little 'plinkety plonk' band, along with all the basic musical
instruments - they played and everyone cheered - only in Haiti - it was
so cute. You'd never have known there were problems around the country
if you had been there!!
