MIAMI
SEVEN HAITIANS
REPATRIATED
Seven Haitian women who had been seeking asylum in the United States were
deported from South Florida on Tuesday as flights resumed to the strife-torn
nation, according to immigrant-rights advocates.
Cheryl Little, executive director of Miami-based Florida Immigrant Advocacy
Center, said the removals were the first since flights were suspended to
Haiti almost two weeks ago on the eve of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's
departure.
''Flights have now resumed and deportations have resumed,'' said Little.
Nina Pruneda, a Miami spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement,
said she could not immediately confirm the removals but noted that the
scheduling of deportations depends more on securing travel documents and
other logistical matters than political issues.
