The 17th anniversary of the Haitian Constitution: the ALLAH party
calls for the mother law to be respected
Port-au-Prince, March 29, 2004 -(AHP)- The Alliance for the
Liberation and the Advancement of Haiti (ALLAH), urged the
government to organize elections within the period of time mandated
by the Constitution.
ALLAH leader Reynold Georges pressed the interim government to hold
elections as soon as possible, thus respecting the Constitution of
1987 and the duration of the terms in office of Senators who continue
to be on the job.
"We are opposed to those who are fancifully calling for the dismissal
of Senators who are currently serving, declared Reynold Georges,
arguing that this would be a violation of Article 111 part 8 of the
Haitian Constitution.
Reynold Georges emphasized that in the aftermath of the aborted
elections of November 29, 1987, the National Governing Council (CNG)
had organized elections in a space of less than two months.
In the event there is a vacancy in the presidency, the Constitution
requires that new elections be held within 90 days at the latest.
He said he is observing a tendency by the Latortue government to wish
to persist in violating the Constitution, which defines the path to
be taken in a political context similar to that which Haiti is
presently experiencing.
The ALLAH leader also said he deplores that 17 years after its
adoption on March 29, 1987, the Constitution continues to be violated
in a systematic manner.
The former member of the Constituent Assembly considered that the
interim government is sailing in completely unconstitutional waters.
