Melinda Miles responds:
During Carnival earlier this year in Jacmel "Grenn nan bounda" was a very
popular chant and was in at least on of the running band's carnival songs.
It was explained to me to mean "Every man for himself", with a literal
translation (sorry for being crude), you have to carry your balls in your
own ass. My sense was that everyone and anyone was using the phrase to
talk about the atmosphere in the country just before the coup, the feeling
that everyone was out for themselves.
The other very popular carnival phrase this year was "Nou pral gen kouri"
- basically, we're going to run.
